The Saudi delegate warned of the growing threat that space debris poses to human rights and sustainable development in a speech to the UN Human Rights Council during its 57th session, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, Saudi Arabia’s permanent envoy to the UN in Geneva, stressed the need for space sustainability to protect the game-changing advantages of space technology for humanity while speaking on behalf of 123 nations.
He emphasized that the utilization of space has “revolutionized global communications, weather forecasting, and disaster management,” emphasizing the critical role that these developments play in defending basic human rights.
The infrastructure that supports these operations is seriously at risk due to the growing issue of space debris, the envoy warned.
He claimed that this threat might seriously impair the international community’s capacity to uphold and advance fundamental human rights.
The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, in especially Goals 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), are directly related to the management of space debris, according to Bin Khothaila.
