The Exhibition of Gulf Art Movements Highlights the History of Arab Artists

JEDDAH: To chart the development of contemporary artists in the Arabian Gulf from the 1930s to the early 2000s, Art Jameel opened the “Gulf Art Movements” exhibition on Thursday. Redrawing the Boundaries: Art Movements and Collectives of the 20th Century Khaleej” is an exhibition at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah that began on May 22 and will end on October 15.

It chronicles the development of contemporary art movements in the Arabian Gulf from the 1930s to the early 2000s and includes pieces by over 50 artists selected from 20 state and private collections. The exhibition “Redrawing the Boundaries” examines the beginnings and growth of significant art movements in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

It explores issues such as shifting landscapes, public and private realms, and the emergence of formal art institutions while looking at how artists reacted to significant changes in their urban settings and communities.

The show included pieces from the Art Jameel Collection, along with loans from prestigious public and private collections, such as the Sharjah Art Foundation, the Sultanate of Oman’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth Collection, the Barjeel Art Foundation, and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art.

The exhibition, which includes more than 80 pieces, showcases a range of inspirations, including Egyptian and South Asian visual cultures, Western modernist movements, and regional folklore and customs.
