A US official informed Reuters that a drone struck US forces in northeastern Syria, despite early reports indicating no casualties.
This is the second assault on US forces in the Middle East in recent days, and the area is anticipating a potential new round of attacks by Iran and its supporters.
The political head of Hamas, which Iran supports, Ismail Haniyeh, was assassinated in Tehran, Iran’s capital, on July 31. Iran threatened to exact retribution on Israel, which is battling the Palestinian Islamist organization in Gaza. Iran accused Israel of being the murderer. Israel has not assumed accountability.
The fear that the Gaza crisis was escalating into a larger Middle East war has been heightened by Israel’s murder and killing of Fuad Shukr, the senior military leader of Hezbollah, a Lebanese group backed by Iran, during an attack on Beirut.
Iran claims that due of its support for Israel, the US is accountable for Haniyeh’s assassination.
“Medical evaluations are ongoing, but initial reports do not suggest any injuries. Regarding the attack in Syria, the US official stated, “We are currently conducting a damage assessment,” under condition of anonymity.
The US and coalition forces are stationed at the Rumalyn Landing Zone, where the incident occurred.
