Bert J. Quint, Founder and CEO of DEBx Medical, has altered the situation of one of the costliest medical conditions. With a deep interest in diving into unexplored horizons of the healthcare industry, particularly wound management, Bert pioneered this field to treat chronic wounds and to eliminate infection in a single treatment, without the need for antibiotics.
Realizing the constraints of treatment facilities in this space, Bert J. Quint along with his team crafted an innovative and sustainable solution that addresses the root cause of chronic wounds, and all this without being dependent on antibiotics. As a visionary leader in this field, Bert J. Quint firmly believes that the healthcare industry needs to be adaptable and be able to evolve with time, offering effective solutions to patients.
The Beginning
Founders
Bert Quint’s journey into the world of wound management began with a partnership founded on a shared vision for better healthcare. In his earlier years, his time and interests were spread between education, becoming a medical biochemist, sports, and many different student jobs, and he did this to interact with as many people as possible. He shares, “A constant desire to explore new horizons drove me towards many incomparable activities. My first real job started with one of the major US Pharma-MedTech companies, after exactly 10 years I became responsible for biotech at another major player. With two friends, Professor Carlo Bignozzi, a well-known chemist and MD Alberto Cogo, and my wife Petra, we embarked on a mission to develop a pioneering treatment for chronic wounds.”
Bert J. Quint shares that the motivation behind his focus on wound management stems from the profound impact of chronic wounds on patients and healthcare systems. He further adds, “Chronic wounds are among the costliest medical issues. These wounds are often infected (80-90%), and there is no effective method to eliminate this.” Recognizing the limitations of existing treatments, Bert and his team developed a method that addresses the root cause of chronic wounds without relying on antibiotics, transforming patient outcomes along offering a sustainable solution in the face of rising antibiotic resistance.
Their discovery of disrupting biofilms in lower tissue layers marked a significant advancement in wound healing technology. “Our method worked and transformed non-healing wounds into granulating and epithelizing wounds, all in a single treatment. This achievement laid the foundation for our company DEBx Medical.” Bert J. Quint reflects.
With a vision deeply intertwined with his personal goals for the future of healthcare, Bert envisions a paradigm shift that brings real value to patients and payers alike. “The healthcare industry needs to evolve to provide more effective and sustainable solutions,” he asserts. With this vision, the industry needs to move from selling products to solving medical conditions, new methods need to strongly benefit patients and caregivers.
Presence Of DEBx Medical
Bert J. Quint mentions that today, 73 million people are suffering from chronic or non-healing wounds, driven by diabetes and other diseases. 2 people in 10 will get diabetes, 25% will suffer a non-healing wound, and another 25% will suffer amputation, reducing life expectance by 80%. Diabetes is only one source of chronic wounds,
The MENA region has significantly inspired him to bring part of our R&D and future production activities directly to a region where inspiration drives progress and the sky’s the limit. “Take Dubai or Riyadh, for example,” he continues, “and experience the explosive change in all segments of daily life. Government offices are called happiness centers, and this is not a whiteout cause.”
Innovation and disruptive medical ideas are welcomed with open arms in the region, and scientists from all over the world work smoothly together, from Ras Al Khaimah to Abu Dhabi and now in Riyadh or Jeddah.
“We are opening our regional headquarters in Riyadh and are planning our next steps in development with the support of government organizations and key hospital centers. Very soon, our activities will expand from Jordan to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and then to India, Malaysia, and many other countries. The main reason for being here is the urgent need for efficient wound treatment, as this region unfortunately has one of the highest diabetic populations, leading to a high incidence of foot ulcers.” Bert mentions.
On Being A Successful Leader
A successful leader in an industry like that of Bert needs to think beyond limits, be different, act fast, and push themselves toward excellence. In the field of chronic wound care, the last significant development was more than 25 years ago. “The main reason why wounds don’t heal is infection,” he says, “and we found a disruptive way to eliminate this quickly, safely, and simply in a single treatment. Despite being a small team, we developed a solution, built a product, and are now changing this medical field.”
Diabetic foot wounds often lead to amputation, with a survival rate over five years dropping to 20%. In the USA, chronic wounds account for the combined cost of the five most expensive cancer treatments, and DEBx has the potential to change this.
Insights For Aspiring Beginners
Bert Quint’s approach to leadership and innovation has been significantly influenced by his personal experiences. Witnessing the remarkable improvement in a patient’s condition after treatment with their disruptive method was a turning point for him, as Bert believes. “When I saw the first patient treated by Alberto, who had a 9-month-old wound, and I saw granulation after 48 hours, it was the moment that gave me the push to abandon everything else and dive into DEBx Medical,” he reflects. This experience strengthened his dedication to enhancing wound care and improving patient outcomes.
For young professionals aspiring to lead in the healthcare industry, Bert advises, “Strive to bring solutions to our system that will make a difference for patients. Work on effective methods, develop a thick skin, and strengthen your resilience.” He also strongly emphasizes the importance of selecting the right partners and investors, as their support and alignment with the company’s vision are crucial for long-term success.
