Syrian Media Reports Israeli Airstrikes Around Key Cities

On the night of Monday, September 8, 2025, Israeli warplanes conducted airstrikes targeting areas near Syria’s central city of Homs, the coastal city of Latakia, and the historic site of Palmyra. Syrian state-affiliated media reported these attacks, which Damascus swiftly condemned as a “blatant infringement” of its sovereignty and a threat to regional stability.

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Tuesday, labelling the strikes as part of an ongoing series of escalations by Israel against Syrian territory. While the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) did not provide specific details on the scale or impact of the attacks, it emphasised that such actions undermine Syria’s sovereignty.

In Homs, reports indicated that Israeli warplanes targeted a Syrian Air Force base, causing significant explosions. In Latakia, military barracks were struck, and ambulances were seen responding to the scene, though initial reports did not confirm casualties. The historic city of Palmyra, previously a site of significant destruction in 2024, was also affected, though specific details on the latest strikes remain unclear.

These recent airstrikes mark a continuation of Israel’s long-standing aerial campaign in Syria, which has intensified following the outbreak of the Gaza war. Despite recent U.S.-mediated talks aimed at de-escalating tensions in southern Syria, the situation remains volatile, with both sides maintaining their positions.
