Violent Clashes Rock Morocco Following Days of Unrest

Violence broke out in multiple cities across Morocco on Tuesday night, according to local media, following days of continuous protests over demands for improvements in the country’s public health and education systems.

Videos shared by various news outlets though not independently verified showed scenes of unrest in Inezgane, near Agadir. Footage captured masked youths throwing stones at police, igniting fires close to a shopping center, and damaging a local post office. Similar disturbances reportedly took place in Ait Amira, Beni Mellal, and Oujda. There were no confirmed reports of injuries as of Wednesday morning.

The wave of protests was sparked by a youth coalition known as “GenZ 212,” whose leaders are currently unknown. On Tuesday night, the group posted a statement on Facebook expressing regret over any acts of vandalism or property damage, urging demonstrators to remain peaceful and preserve the validity of their demands.

Tuesday’s clashes marked a shift, as the previous three days of demonstrations had reportedly remained peaceful. Authorities have increased their response, with public prosecutors announcing that 37 people will stand trial for their roles in the protests.
