Canada PM Mark Carney Says Military Role in Iran War Cannot Be Ruled Out

CANBERRA, Australia On Thursday, Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that he could not completely rule out his nation sending troops to fight in the Middle East. The growing conflict in the Middle East, which was triggered by a huge US-Israeli strike on Iran that murdered its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has overshadowed Carney’s visit to Australia this week.

Carney was asked if there was a scenario in which Canada would intervene when in Canberra with local colleague Anthony Albanese. While emphasizing that the subject was “hypothetical,” he stated that “one can never categorically rule out participation.

Carney declared, “We will always defend Canadians, and we will stand by our allies.  The US-Israeli strikes on Iran were “inconsistent with international law, according to Carney. He is in favor of measures to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, though, a stance that Canada adopts “with regret” because it is “another example of the failure of the international order.”

On Thursday, the Canadian leader restated his demand that the violence be de-escalated. Carney is traveling as part of a multi-nation Asia-Pacific tour with the goal of lowering dependency on the US as a safeguard against what he has called a collapsing US-led world order. The goal of the tour’s stop in Australia is to attract investment and strengthen relations with a “middle power” that shares similar values.
