JERUSALEM: Israel’s latest assaults on Iran have not only revived worries of a full-scale return to war, they risk putting a strain on the close ties between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump.
While Trump appears to avoid the notion of the conflict being reignited, Israel and Iran have both embraced the volatile opposition that had always hung over the ceasefire, starting their first exchange since it was launched in April.
Iran replied with a missile blitz towards Israel in retaliation for Israeli strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, prompting calls from certain Israeli authorities for an unyielding response. Firebrand National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir requested that Tehran burn tonight.
The Israeli leader again waved the “right to self-defense” as the U.S. tries to head off reprisal and stories mount of Trump’s growing impatience with Netanyahu. When ballistic missiles are fired at civilian population centers… it’s hard to expect a sovereign nation not to react,” retired colonel and defense specialist Adi Bershadsky told AFP. I think there was some understanding or coordination between the parties on how things would play out,” Bershadsky added.
