The Indian Embassy in Muscat, Oman, reports that all 14 crew members aboard the MSC Virat 1 have been rescued and safely transferred to the MV Jabal Ali 9. All 14 crew members have been rescued and are now on board Jabal Ali 9, which is going to Mumbai. “The crew members are safe and healthy,” the Indian embassy stated.
According to preliminary reports, the vessel’s engine failed, prompting the crew to safely transfer to a liferaft before rescue teams arrived. Search and rescue operations were immediately begun in collaboration with Omani authorities and adjacent vessels in the area of the event.
The incident occurred amid a series of maritime incidents in the region, including an earlier operation on June 8 in which Indian Navy helicopters rescued 24 sailors from a burning ship off the coast of Oman, according to officials.
According to India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, a fire broke out on the MT Marivex, a Palau-flagged tanker, about 1.30 p.m. (0800 GMT). The Forward Seamen’s Union of India shared images on social media of crew members being winched from the vessel by helicopter as heavy black smoke billowed from the bridge and lodging suites.
