UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Monday urging Afghanistan’s Taliban leadership to immediately stop their crackdown on women and battle militant groups within Afghanistan that Pakistan accuses of carrying out cross-border assaults.
China’s UN Ambassador Fu Cong, whose country sponsored the resolution, expressed optimism that the Afghan government will “take more proactive measures to protect human rights, especially the rights of women, and project an image of openness, inclusivity, and responsibility.”
The resolution extends the UN political mission in Afghanistan until June 17, 2027. It authorizes the mission to support humanitarian aid deliveries and promote national and local governance without discrimination based on gender, religion, or ethnicity, with full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation of women, minorities, youth, and persons with disabilities.
The resolution’s acceptance comes after at least 30 women were arrested in the western city of Herat earlier this month for allegedly breaking the Taliban’s strict dress code. Taliban police forcibly dispersed a rare demonstration provoked by the arrests, shooting and killing one person and injuring several others, according to the UN mission known as UNAMA.
