JERUSALEM/DUBAI: According to the most recent updated toll from the Lebanese health ministry, Israeli bombings and bombardments have killed at least 47 persons and injured 97 more in Lebanon since midnight on Friday.
At least seven women and two children were among the dead, and the numbers were made public just before a new cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah was scheduled to begin.According to a US official, Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah reached an agreement on a truce that will start at 4 p.m. local time on Friday. This comes after the US-Iranian interim agreement to stop the wider Middle East conflict was put to the test by an increase in hostilities in Lebanon.
Reuters received confirmation of the ceasefire from two Hezbollah sources and a senior Israeli official. The Israeli official declared, “For us, it is not a time of war if Hezbollah does not attack us.” The official also stated that Israeli forces would continue to be present in southern Lebanon.
However, a Reuters journalist in northern Israel reported that Israeli attacks were still occurring over the border in Lebanon about an hour after the truce was supposed to go into effect. From behind a Lebanese village close to the border, a cloud of smoke emerged.
