DHAKA/NEW DELHI: To commemorate the second anniversary of the rebellion that overthrew her, exiled former prime minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to deliver a virtual speech from India on Wednesday. Bangladesh has cautioned the nation’s media not to publish her remarks.
Since her administration was overthrown in 2024 by student-led uprisings, Hasina has stayed in India. Due to her crackdown on the protests, she was found guilty of crimes against humanity in 2025 and given the death penalty; she has since declared the decision to be unlawful.
Along with her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and other speakers, the 78-year-old will make her first public appearance since leaving Dhaka, albeit via video link, at a function organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi.
The former premier told Reuters last month that she and party colleagues intend to return from exile around December and appear in court. This move would test how Bangladesh’s new government handles its most prominent political opponent. Hasina’s aides have not disclosed the contents of her speech.
