PARIS: After long being marked by a trade balance that favours the Kingdom, the economic relationship between France and Saudi Arabia seems to have entered a new phase. It currently shows a contrasting picture, especially after 2025, when France’s exports to Saudi Arabia totaled around $4.5 billion while its imports came to about $3.7 billion. This turnaround is a sign of a more profound change in the two economies, according to Dominique Brunin, director of the Franco-Arab Chamber of Commerce, who talked to Arab News in French.
He emphasized the consistent rise in French exports in recent years by saying, “The balance has once again become favourable to France.” French imports from Saudi Arabia have drastically decreased at the same period. In 2022, they remained at about $7 billion. The nature of trade between the two nations is primarily responsible for this change; oil and petroleum goods continue to make up the majority of French imports from the Kingdom.
However, while import value fell because oil prices remained relatively low in 2025, France has progressively diversified its energy sources. However, Brunin believes the change mostly reflects Saudi Arabia’s efforts to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on oil earnings as part of its Vision 2030 agenda.
