Le Pen Begins French Presidential Bid, Vows to Restore Rule of law

ORLÉANS, France (AP) — France’s far-right presidential contender Marine Le Pen launched her campaign Sunday to succeed President Emmanuel Macron, promising to “restore the rule of law” if elected next year. Le Pen, the favourite in the polls, appears to be gaining from the convulsions France has been experiencing for weeks, with violence breaking out on the sidelines of massive rallies against the expense of living.

After looting and arson flared on the fringes of rallies last weekend, she said: “We are going to restore the rule of law. She was addressing 8,500 followers of her nationalist, anti-immigration party in the city of Orleans, where Joan of Arc, idolised by the far right as a symbol of national resistance, lifted an English siege in 1429.

We are not offering the country a return to the past, but the dawn of a new era,” the 58-year-old told the throng, which erupted in cries of “We’re going to win, we’re going to win. Le Pen vowed to protect France’s cultural character from its language and traditions to its principles and way of life, garnering thundering cheers from supporters waving French flags.
