Iran Security Chief ‘Very positive Talks’ with Mecca Pact Countries

Iran Security Chief ‘Very positive Talks’ with Mecca Pact Countries

Today, diplomacy and efforts to avert a broader regional flare-up took center stage, with two important developments showcasing increased efforts to tackle regional security issues. Egypt’s parliament approves military aid to Saudi Arabia

Egypt’s parliament on Monday approved President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi to take “necessary measures” to support Saudi Arabia in defending the kingdom against attacks by Yemen’s Houthis. The decision follows a request from Sisi, who stressed last week that any Egyptian cooperation would be to defend Saudi land and would not involve an attack on Yemen. It’s unclear in what form any potential military backup would be.

Iran held top-level discussions with Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan on Monday in Tehran, the three nations that signed the Mecca mutual defense treaty in August. The conference was the first high-level communication between Iran and the three countries since the regional war began with the US and Israeli bombings on Iran and then spread with the Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia.

The meetings, sought by Pakistan, focused on regional cooperation, the fallout from the US-Israeli assault on Iran and measures to avoid a resumption of military escalation. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for greater unity in the region, urging Islamic countries to stand together and adopt a unified stance.
