With Strong Brushstrokes, A Saudi Calligraffiti Artist Rewrites Tradition

Artist Ahmed Al-Sulaimani from Saudi Arabia is pushing the limits of conventional art genres by combining graffiti-inspired methods with Arabic calligraphy.

The artist from Riyadh got his start in calligraffiti when he took an Arabic calligraphy class in school and fell in love with the elaborate technique.

Motivated by the expressive possibilities of text, Al-Sulaimani started experimenting by fusing this antiquated art style with vivid and lively graffiti.

Al-Sulaimani explained, “Calligraffiti is a fusion of Arabic calligraphy and graffiti art.” Calligraffiti is a type of graffiti that combines Arabic calligraphy with graffiti methods, whereas graffiti usually employs the English language and letters. I use styles and techniques influenced by graffiti to construct Arabic lettering.

This strategy has drawn the interest of art fans as well as led to incredible chances, such as a mural cooperation with Jeddah Municipality, which was his first step into the realm of large-scale public art.

“With this project, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to incorporate Arabic calligraphy into expansive murals,” he stated. “It attracted a lot of attention and motivated me to research the application of Arabic calligraphy in public art further.”
