JERUSALEM: In an effort to stop Israeli settlers’ increasing attacks on Palestinians throughout the West Bank, Israel’s soldiers closed the West Bank community of Taybeh to outsiders on Sunday. According to the military, only Israelis are subject to the command; Palestinians are not. Taybeh was declared a closed military zone “due to some violent attacks by Israelis in the region,” according to a spokeswoman.
According to a statement from the military, “IDF soldiers are dispatched to the area upon receiving any report of violations of the order and operate to disperse the gatherings and detain suspects in order to protect the citizens of the area and to maintain order.
The Roman Catholic cardinal of Jerusalem and the Greek Orthodox patriarch visited Taybeh, one of the few remaining Christian settlements in the West Bank, last year. The Taybeh Brewing Co., which is regarded as the oldest microbrewery in the Middle East, is also located there.
Due to deadly Israeli attacks on Palestinians, certain Western nations have announced sanctions against settlement groups. Palestinian civil defense firefighters and a local priest reported that Israeli settlers hindered Palestinians from extinguishing a large fire near Taybeh in the Israeli-occupied West Bank in June, undermining the residents’ fundamental rights thru a “ongoing pattern of intimidation and unjustified violence.
