Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used to diversify cyberattacks beyond classic phishing and emails attacks, said head of the UAE Cyber Security Council Dr Mohamed Al Kuwaiti. The days of AI being used primarily for phishing and email attacks are behind us. It is now being leveraged across a broader spectrum of cyber threats including data exfiltration, data wiping and sophisticated cyber operations that we have seen almost daily in recent months,” he said while delivering a keynote speech at 3rd Government Cybersecurity Summit in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
With the subject “Securing the UAE’s Digital Future: Building Resilience, Trust & Innovation”, the summit looked at the growing sophistication of cyber dangers to governments, business and vital infrastructure, as artificial intelligence quickly transforms the threat landscape.
Malicious actors are increasingly leveraging AI in cyberattacks, extending beyond phishing and emails to more diverse attacks encompassing data theft, data exfiltration and data destruction, Al Kuwaiti stated. AI is being used in cyber terrorism and cyber warfare to orchestrate attacks and overcome many of the conventional security measures we have relied on in the past,” he said.
Attacks are no longer confined to critical infrastructure, but are increasingly targeting government institutions, operational technology systems, corporations, supply chains and individuals as digital ecosystems become more linked, he noted.
