Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has arrived in New York to address the United Nations General Assembly, Iranian state media announced on Wednesday. State broadcaster IRIB showed a video clip of Pezeshkian disembarking a plane with a caption suggesting the Iranian president has arrived at a New York airport. Analysts say it’s the first time a leader of a country at war with the United States has walked on American soil to address a UN assembly.
Ever tighter US sanctions aimed at crippling Iranian aviation came into place Wednesday, after Washington pledged to “shut down” Tehran’s airlines and punish anyone doing deal with them, AFP reports. Iranian media said on Tuesday that flights to the Iraqi and Omani capitals will be cancelled on Wednesday in the first recognition of disruption, but other routes would go as normal.
The new measures, announced Monday by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, follow prior aviation bans and his warning of a “economic D-Day” to force the Islamic republic to submit, when military means of ending the Middle East war stall.
