NEW YORK: Saudi Arabia’s KSrelief assistance agency co-hosted a high-level conference on the fringes of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday to address the importance of diplomacy in backing humanitarian efforts in war- and disaster-stricken areas.
“Political obstruction, natural disasters, violations of international humanitarian law and funding gaps are creating unprecedented challenges for humanitarian work,” said Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, supervisor general of KSrelief.
Arab News was at the ceremony along with Pakistani, UN and European officials and members of human rights organisations. KSrelief has implemented 4,463 humanitarian projects in 113 countries since 2015, spending more than $8.5 billion on food security, health, education, shelter, water and sanitation.
The fundamental limits for humanitarian action have become more political than operational, said al-Rabeeah. Today, almost 120 million people are forcibly displaced around the world. “To deal with this stark reality diplomacy has to be deliberately tied to humanitarian outcomes in the Middle East and globally,” he said. The humanitarian community is hamstrung in the face of such immense suffering in Gaza,” he said.
