Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Born Pope Francis, 1936–2025

After experiencing a number of illnesses in his latter years, the pope was brought to the hospital in February due to a respiratory tract infection. Despite his deteriorating health, he had consistently and resolutely stated that, in contrast to his predecessor, he had no plans to leave the position of pope. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who was born in Argentina in 1936, succeeded Benedict XVI as pope in 2013. The first pope from the Americas, he was the Jesuit Archbishop of Buenos Aires at the time. His public remarks amid Argentina’s financial crisis in the early 2000s had made him a well-known figure in Latin America.

He presented a more simple, austere image as Pope Francis than his predecessor; according to an often circulated rumour that has never been verified, he told an aide that “the funfair is over” when he declined to don ornate papal regalia for his first public appearance.

The pope was well-known for standing out for refugees and others displaced by war, and he regularly voiced a personal affinity with the impoverished. Pope Francis said that the Vatican will host two refugee families during the 2015 migrant crisis, which witnessed a spike in risky and fatal crossings to Europe across the Mediterranean. He also urged Catholics to provide a hand.
