MOSCOW: On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared an Easter truce in the Ukrainian war, which would begin this evening and go until Sunday midnight. President Donald Trump has been pressuring Moscow and Kyiv to agree to a truce, but he hasn’t been able to get any significant concessions from the Kremlin. This is the reason behind Russia’s short-term ceasefire proposal.
“The Russian side announces an Easter truce today from 1800 (1500 GMT) to midnight Sunday (2100 GMT),” Putin stated in televised remarks after a meeting with Russian chief of military Valery Gerasimov. Putin referred to the truce as “based on humanitarian reasons” and declared, “I order for this period to stop all military action.”
Our troops must be prepared to withstand any aggressive actions by the enemy and potential violations of the truce, while we are proceeding on the assumption that the Ukrainian side will follow our example,” Putin stated.
Ukraine “more than 100 times… breached an agreement on not striking energy infrastructure,” he said Gerasimov had warned him. Following accusations by both parties of breaching a purported agreement without a written agreement in place, Russia cancelled a moratorium on hitting Ukrainian energy targets on Friday.
