Lawsuit Claims Meta Used AI to Target Workers With Medical Conditions for Layoffs

The plaintiffs are requesting a preliminary decision from the court to prevent Meta from finishing the layoffs while they pursue their claims in private arbitration. They were informed in May that their employment would be abolished beginning on July 22. The employees claim that while Meta’s agreements mandate individual arbitration of workplace problems, they do not extend to requests for interim relief. A representative for Meta stated on Tuesday that the allegations are unfounded.

According to Reuters, Meta laid off 8,000 employees, or 10% of its worldwide staff, in May and planned further layoffs later this year. Since then, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that he does not anticipate any further layoffs for the entire firm this year. The corporation is investing more in AI and integrating AI agents into its product offerings and internal work processes as part of a comprehensive revamp.

The 26 plaintiffs, who filed the case under pseudonyms, are accusing Meta of breaking state and federal rules that prohibit discrimination or retribution against employees who are pregnant, have impairments, or take medical leave.

Additionally, they assert that Meta violated recently enacted regulations in California and New York City by neglecting to test its AI algorithms for bias. Six states, including California, New York, and the District of Columbia, are represented among the plaintiffs.
