A Miracle After Four Days: The Inspiring Rescue of a Father and Son in Venezuela

LA GUAIRA, Venezuela: Four days after Venezuela’s deadly earthquakes, a man and his kid were rescued alive from the debris of a collapsed building on Sunday. The French and American rescue personnel working in the region, who are racing against the time to find more survivors, found hope in this scene.

As a crowd gathered around the emergency vehicles in La Guaira, rescue workers carried the two, both wearing masks and clearly frail, on makeshift fabric stretchers across streets littered with debris to a waiting ambulance.

The coastal state was most severely affected by Wednesday’s tremors, which left thousands missing and at least 1,450 dead. After 12 hours of arduous work by teams that used sophisticated search cameras to cautiously navigate through unstable rubble and approach the trapped victims, they were eventually rescued.

We are doing everything we can to rehydrate them and administer various medications during the extraction process, which is moving very slowly, because they are extremely weak, as any patient trapped under rubble for four days would be,” a French Civil Security official stated.

Members of the French Civil Security and American rescuers from the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue squad in Virginia, who saved a mother and her 9-month-old child the day before, make up the rescue squad in that area.
