RIYADH: The Saudi Press Agency said on Saturday that Abdulaziz Al-Wasel and Jerome Bonnafont, the permanent representatives of Saudi Arabia and France to the UN, co-chaired a briefing for UN member and observer nations at the UN headquarters in New York. With Saudi Arabia and France serving as joint chairs, the meeting “discussed preparations for the upcoming high-level international conference on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian cause and the implementation of the two-state solution, which is scheduled to be held in June,” according to the SPA.
The creation of an independent Palestinian state is the “cornerstone for achieving security and stability in the region,” according to Al-Wasel, who also emphasized that the Kingdom has a “longstanding and unwavering position” in favor of the two-state solution. Al-Wasel also declared that a number of working groups would be established to tackle important concerns pertaining to a peaceful resolution of the dispute. He urged member nations to offer their ideas and suggestions in order to aid in the conference’s planning in June.
The meeting serves as “a formal and comprehensive track to enhance international efforts aimed at reaching a just and lasting resolution,” according to Al-Wasel. In addition to reaffirming their commitment to the two-state solution as the only internationally accepted formula to resolve the conflict, the majority of UN member states and observer delegations from regional blocs expressed full support for the efforts spearheaded by Saudi Arabia and France to organize the conference. They also emphasized the need for concrete results, such as the recognition of a Palestinian state.
