Why Nepalese Protesters Are Demanding the Release of the Uprising Report

KATMANDU: On Sunday, young people from Nepal staged a protest in Kathmandu, calling for the publication of the results of the fatal 2025 uprising that brought down the previous administration.

The protests on September 8–9, which started over a temporary ban on social media but tapped into long-standing anger over corruption and economic hardship, resulted in at least 77 deaths. For the fatalities, no one has been held responsible.

Interim leader Sushila Karki established a commission to look into the violence, which included the burning of numerous government buildings and the parliament, just days after Nepal had elections on March 5.

A 900-page report and an additional 8,000 pages of data were handed to the committee for investigation after more than 200 people, including the ousted former prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli, were questioned.

A 26-year-old activist named Sanatan Rijal stated, “We are here seeking the report of why the incident happened, why so many youths were killed. Another protester on Sunday, Laxmi Ghimire, stated that “promoting a motto of good governance will not make the country and its people feel it. The protest on Sunday is just one of several that have broken out in Nepal’s capital over the past week, demanding openness from the interim administration.
