WASHINGTON: The US military announced Thursday that it has launched a fresh series of strikes against Iranian military sites, following President Donald Trump’s warning that Tehran would be hit “very hard” if efforts to reach a peace agreement failed.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that its forces carried out additional self-defense strikes at the direction of the commander-in-chief. CENTCOM stated on its official social media account that US forces hit Iranian military surveillance capabilities, communications systems, and air defense installations across Iran early Thursday.
The command stated that US Marine Corps, Air Force, and Navy assets utilized precision-guided munitions against targets posing a danger to American forces and international commercial shipping crossing regional seas.
The strikes are in response to Iran’s unwarranted and continued aggression,” CENTCOM stated, adding that US forces remain vigilant, lethal, and ready. Earlier, CENTCOM stated that at 12:15 a.m. (midnight) Arabic Standard Time (AST), American forces launched “additional self-defence strikes” against various Iranian sites.
Trump told reporters at the White House that the US would maintain military action while also trying diplomacy. “We’re going to be attacking them, very hard,” Trump added, referring to Iran’s downing of a US Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.
