RIYADH: According to international relations specialist Joseph A. Kechichian, Saudi Arabia’s national trajectory is being driven by rapidly increasing human capital at home and adaptable diplomacy abroad. The senior fellow at the King Faisal Center stressed during his speech at the Security and History Dialogue Conference in Riyadh that although international alliances change over time, Saudi Arabia’s century-old emphasis on regional security never changes.
Speaking at a panel titled “Saudi Arabia and International Partnerships for Security and Development,” Kechichian clarified that, despite shifting global alliances and strategic objectives, Saudi foreign policy is based on three unchanging pillars: stability, security, and justice.
Foreign policy is constantly evolving. According to Kechichian, it can never remain motionless and stale. “Principles remain constant. For the past several hundred years, stability has been the top priority for all Saudi Arabian leaders.
He pointed out that upholding national security is crucial to maintaining that stability, with justice functioning as the crucial third pillar. Security cannot exist without justice,” he stated, adding that altering global dynamics inevitably leads to adjustments in international alignment. “When it comes to foreign policy, you ultimately act in your own best interests, which evolve over time. While interests evolve, principles remain constant.
