How Middle East Boards Are Outpacing the UK and US in AI Governance Planning

RIYADH: A poll of over 400 business executives revealed that Middle Eastern boards are among the most progressive in the world when it comes to artificial intelligence. According to the study, which was included in Board Intelligence’s summer 2026 Board Value Index, Saudi Arabia has a particularly advanced level of AI governance engagement, with 68% of directors actively considering if choices should be made by humans or by AI.

Nearly all Saudi boards surveyed are considering the governance implications of AI, with an additional 26% having already discussed the matter at the board level. According to the report, which was based on responses from CEOs, chief financial officers, and non-executive directors from organizations in the US, the UK, the Nordic countries, and the Middle East, 42% of Middle Eastern directors believe their board is a crucial tool for creating value, which is the highest percentage among the four regions surveyed.

According to another PwC study, roughly 59% of Middle Eastern CEOs have developed appropriate AI and risk management procedures, and 70% have a well-defined strategy for AI activities. Middle Eastern boards operate in one of the world’s most turbulent economic environments, according to Pippa Begg, CEO and co-founder of Board Intelligence.
