How Saudi Development Programs Are Transforming Housing in Yemen

BAKU: During the thirteenth session of the World Urban Forum, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen and UN-Habitat signed an agreement to implement the second phase of the suitable housing project.

Abdullah bin Kadashah, assistant supervisor general for institutional relations, was the representative for the Saudi rehabilitation program. Rania Hedaya, the regional director for the Arab region for the United Nations-Habitat program, was the representative for the United Nations Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The first part of the project, which was completed in September 2024 and improved living circumstances for more than 4,500 beneficiaries through the renovation of 650 dwelling units, is the foundation upon which the second phase of the project is built, according to Saudi Press Agency.

The first phase also contributed to the development of national capacities in the areas of housing and building, as well as the creation of job opportunities and the provision of training. Through the restoration of damaged dwellings and the improvement of infrastructure, the new phase aims to restore 760 housing units for low-income Yemeni families. As a part of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to improve the quality of life in Yemen and to encourage sustainable urban development, this initiative has been implemented.

The project will target around 4,560 individuals, equivalent to approximately 760 families, and will span the governorates of Aden, Taiz, and Lahij in Yemen.

In addition, it includes providing vocational training to 220 young people currently without jobs and preparing approximately 50 technical personnel working for government agencies to build local capacity in housing restoration.
