Saudi Arabia Denounces the Somali President's Attempted Assassination

RIYADH: On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia denounced an incident that targeted Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s motorcade. Shortly after Mohamud’s motorcade departed the palace grounds on Tuesday, a roadside bomb exploded close to the presidential home; nevertheless, officials say the head of state was unharmed.

According to a statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry, “The Kingdom reiterates its strong position in opposing all forms of violence, terrorism, and extremism, and reaffirms its solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia and its people against all threats to its security and stability.

Up to four persons, including a journalist who was inside an adjacent building that fell following the explosion, were reported dead. Al-Shabab, a Somali insurgent group, took credit for the assault.

Mahamud is scheduled to lead the military battle against the extremist group, and the president’s entourage was on their way to the airport to go to the frontlines in Middle Shabelle. In recent months, the Somali government has stepped up its efforts to dismantle Al-Shabab in Middle Shabelle and other areas.
