WASHINGTON: On Friday, President Donald Trump defended his son’s recent wedding celebration, which was partially funded by a Russian oligarch. However, he added that he had been assured the funds would be reimbursed. It’s completely OK. Trump said to reporters in the Oval Office, “And a lot of people have parties and all, but, as I understand it, he paid them back.” “I hear he paid them back,” he added, without further explanation.
This week, ProPublica revealed that Umar Kremlev, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, contributed to the cost of a fireworks display and the rental of a private island for Donald Trump Jr. and socialite Bettina Anderson’s May wedding in the Bahamas.
Bettina Trump described Kremlev, the head of the International Boxing Association, as a “dear friend” who “very generously hosted two incredible nites of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding” in a later post on her Instagram site that was signed by the pair. Nevertheless, the president, who said he was too busy to attend the wedding, justified Kremlev’s participation in the celebrations. “A person that he knows, I guess a friend of his, gave him a wedding party,” he remarked about his son without giving any specifics. Trump remarked, “That’s very common,” and added, “I’ve given wedding parties to numerous people,” thus implying that no background checks were performed on such presents.
