4 Dead in Migrant Shipwreck off Libya, Confirms Red Crescent

Libya’s Red Crescent led a significant rescue operation after two boats carrying irregular migrants capsized near the coastal city of Khoms, located 120 kilometers east of Tripoli. Of the nearly 100 people affected, four were confirmed dead; all were Bangladeshis traveling in one vessel which had 26 passengers. The second boat carried 69 migrants, including two Egyptians and the rest Sudanese, eight of whom were children, but reported no fatalities among them.

The Red Crescent had received an overnight alert about the capsized boats and coordinated with the coast guard and port authorities for the rescue. Photos released showed the migrants in Khoms receiving medical aid, clothes, and blankets, alongside images of body bags for the deceased.

Libya remains a key transit point for thousands seeking to reach Europe by sea each year. Earlier in the week, another migrant boat from Libya sank, leaving 42 people missing and presumed dead, according to the International Organization for Migration. UNHCR records reveal more than 1,700 people have died or gone missing on Mediterranean routes in 2025 alone, and IOM’s Missing Migrants project finds approximately 33,000 migrants have died or vanished in this region since 2014.
