DUBAI: Iran’s Mehr news agency said on Thursday that several explosions were heard in southern Iran, including Bushehr, the location of one of Iran’s nuclear plants, Konarak, and Choghadak. A US-Israeli projectile hit a military installation outside the southern Iranian city, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, which cited a local official in Bushehr.
An attack on an Iranian navy site near Konarak was also reported by state media. An official further stated that Iranian air defense systems reacting to the attack were responsible for the explosion boom heard near Bushehr.
Al Arabiya English was informed by people with knowledge of the situation that the US military was not attacking targets in Iran. Following US strikes on Iran’s eastern and southern coastline provinces earlier on Thursday, Iran attacked US military facilities in Gulf states.
A ceasefire deal that had been in place for three weeks was further strained by the skirmishes. The events occurred on the day when Iran buried its deceased Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at a shrine in Mashhad, following a week of large-scale rallies and funeral processions.
