RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s defense ministry announced early on Wednesday that it had hit targets in Iraq that were supported by Iran. In a social media statement, the ministry stated that Saudi Arabia would react to aggression rather than pursue escalation.
It stated that the action was carried out in tandem with US soldiers. The ministry had earlier claimed to have intercepted and destroyed several drones that were attempting to target Eastern Province petroleum installations on Tuesday night.
Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Malki, the ministry’s official spokesperson, claimed that terrorist militias supported by Iran were responsible for the “terrorist” strikes, which once again came from Iraqi land. He upheld the Kingdom’s inalienable right to protect its resources and itself, as well as its right to react when and when it is most appropriate.
This “aggressive approach adopted by the Iran-affiliated terrorist militias in Iraq came at a time when the Kingdom was exerting efforts to contribute to ending the escalation in the region, in a manner that preserves its security and stability,” according to a statement from Saudi Arabia’s foreign affairs ministry.
But according to the statement, “these terrorist militias with ties to Iran chose the reckless escalatory approach, the violation of international law, and the disregard for what Islamic brotherhood requires in terms of adhering to the principles of good neighbourliness.
